Rocky Mountains; dry, treeless prairie in the centre and S; towards the N this merges into a zone of poplar, then mixed forest. The valley of the Peace River is the most northerly farming land in Canada (except for Inuit pastures), and there are good grazing lands in the foothills of the Rockies. National parks are Banff, Elk Island, Jasper, Waterton Lake, and Wood Buffalo; Waterton Glacier International Peace Park (partly in Montana), is a World Heritage Site

Coal; wheat, barley, oats, sugar beet in the S; more than a million head of cattle; oil and natural gas (accounting for most of Canada's production); an oil pipeline extends from Edmonton to Lake Superior; the McMurray district has deposits of bituminous sands to the SW of Lake Athabasca, which become economic to work for oil at times of high world fuel prices; lumbering is important; Alberta has the largest coal resources in Canada, the principal mines being near Edmonton and at Anthracite, Mountain Park, Lethbridge, and Canmor

History:

In the 17th century much of its area was part of a grant to the Hudson's Bay Company for the fur trade, and the first trading posts were established in the late 18th century. The grant was bought by Canada 1869, and Alberta became a province 1905. After an oil strike at Leduc in 1947, Alberta became a major oil and gas producer.
