Landlocked country in central Africa, bounded N by Uganda, E by Tanzania,
S by Burundi, and W by the Democratic Republic of Congo (formerly Zaire).
Government
The 1978 constitution, amended in 1991 and 1995, provides for a president
and a single-chamber legislature, the 70-member National Development
Council (CND), both elected by universal adult suffrage for a five-year
term. The president, who may be re-elected up to the age of 60, appoints
a prime minister and council of ministers. At the end of the civil war
in July 1994, a Transitional National Assembly was formed and multiparty
elections scheduled for 1999.
