History:
The first settlers were Dutch 1631 and Swedes 1638, but in 1664 the
area was captured by the British and transferred to William Penn.
A separate colony from 1704, it fought in the American Revolution
as a state 1776, was one of the original 13 states, and was the
first state to ratify the US Constitution 7 Dec 1787. In 1802
the Du Pont gunpowder mill was established near Wilmington. Completion
of the Philadelphia- Baltimore railroad line 1838, through Wilmington,
fostered development. Delaware was important as a chemical centre
by the early 1900s. Two auto-assembly plants and an oil refinery
were built after World War II.
