Blaenau Gwent

Unitary authority in south Wales, created in 1996 from part of the former county of Gwent; population 73,000 (1996); area 109 sq km/42 sq mi. The administrative centre is Ebbw Vale. The area no longer depends on coal, iron, and steel industries, and former industrial land is being redeveloped. Part of the Brecon Beacons National Park is here.

The area is undulating, and includes Mynydd Carn-y-Cefn (550 m/1,800 ft). The chief rivers are the Sirhowy and Ebbw. The other main towns are Tredegar, which has a tourist industry, and Abertillery. Before 1996 it was a district of Gwent.
