Caerphilly

Unitary authority in south Wales, created in 1996 from parts of the former counties of Mid Glamorgan and Gwent; population (1996) 172,000; area 270 sq km/104 sq mi. The administrative centre is Hengoed.

The chief rivers are the Rhymney and Sirhowy. Other principal towns are Caerphilly, Bargoed, Newbridge, and Rhymney. Iron and steel production and coal mining have been replaced by a wide range of light industries.
