Torfaen

Unitary authority in south Wales, created in 1996 from part of the former county of Gwent; population (1996) 90,700; area 98 sq km/38 sq mi. The administrative centre is Pontypool. The area has attracted new companies, involved in the advanced electronics, automotive and engineering industries, to replace the old industries of iron and tinplate manufacture and coal mining.

Coity Mountain is situated in the north, and the chief river is the Afon Llwyd. The first new town built in Wales, Cwmbran, is in Torfaen.
