Wrexham
Unitary authority in northeast Wales, created in 1996 from part of
the former county of Clywd; population (1996) 123,500; area 500
sq km/ 193 sq mi. The administrative centre is Wrexham. Little
remains of the traditional industries of iron-making and coal
mining. New industries include food manufacture, plastics, pharmaceuticals,
and high technology industries. In Clywedog Valley there is notable
countryside and industrial archaeology.
Other main towns are Holt and Ruabon. The western side of the
authority is mountainous, including Ruabon Mountain. The main
river is the Dee.
